Description
Philodendron atabapoense originates from Venezuela and Brazil and is primarily found along the Atabapo River, which forms the border between Venezuela and Colombia, and from which it derives its name.
P. atabapoense is a climbing species with rather long internodes and grows rapidly upwards. Its leaves are elongated and can reach up to 1 m in length and 15 to 30 cm in width. They have a distinctly beautiful, slightly bluish coloration (especially in bright light), which results from a thick, protective wax layer.
It undergoes several changes in its leaf shape as it grows larger. Here are some leaves of P. atabapoense plants of different ages and sizes placed side by side for comparison.
Especially as a young plant, it is easily confused with Philodendron billietiae, but there are some simple features by which the two plants can be distinguished: The undersides of the leaves of young P. atabapoense are red to purple (green in P. billietiae). The petioles of P. atabapoense are green or slightly reddish (yellow to bright orange in P. billietiae).
The two species also have different requirements for growing conditions. P. billietiae likes it very warm, rather dry and sunny, while P. atabapoense prefers "typical" conditions for Philodendron (warm but not hot, bright indirect light and consistently slightly moist). Both species are, of course, beautiful and should not be missing from any collection, especially since they can be cared for in very different locations ;)
You will receive a strong young plant in a 12 cm pot.
