Description
Philodendron billietiae originates from northeastern Brazil and Suriname. It grows as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte in exposed (i.e., sunny) locations. What is particularly striking is that it almost always initially grows on rocks and only as a larger plant does it grow upwards on surrounding plants.
P. billietiae has strikingly leathery leaves, up to 1 meter long and 30 cm wide. The leaf surface is dull dark green with slight ripples. The leaf veins are light green to yellow. The orange petioles are particularly beautiful. With plenty of light, the leaves are held almost vertically. P. billietiae usually has only a few leaves at a time and regularly sheds older leaves, so that mature plants are green only in the uppermost part of their long stem (link).
This Philodendron is surprisingly well suited as a houseplant. Unlike many other members of the genus with long, hanging leaves, it does not grow in the shady, moist undergrowth of rainforests in nature, but in sunny, exposed locations. Therefore, it copes very well with dry air. However, it needs warmth and very bright light to grow well. A summer stay in the garden or on the balcony is therefore very beneficial for it! Even direct sun is not a problem with some acclimatization.
You will receive a young plant in a 12 cm round pot.
