Description
Philodendron verrucosum is a Philodendron species relatively widespread in Central and South America. It grows as a vine or on the forest floor of the rainforests there, at altitudes of approximately 0 to 1500 m. The species is quite variable, and several forms with different colorations exist that are not clearly distinguished from one another. The form offered here, "Incensi," corresponds to the typical appearance.
The leaves are velvety dark green on the upper surface with light veins. The undersides are patterned in red and green. Fresh leaves are entirely red underneath. The leaf stalks are densely covered with hair- or wart-like projections, which is also the defining characteristic; verrucous means "warty". The leaves can grow to approximately 40 cm long and 30 cm wide.
To get such large leaves on your own P. verrucosum , two things are absolutely necessary:
On the one hand, the plant needs plenty of indirect light, but no direct sunlight.
On the other hand, P. verrucosum needs a climbing support to which it can cling with its aerial roots. Only then will it develop its enormous and spectacular leaves.
With good care, P. verrucosum grows quite quickly and forms large leaves in a short time.
