Piper nigrum 'variegata' (Variegated Black Pepper)

True peppercorns are a tropical vine from India. Their berries have been valued for thousands of years as both a medicinal and culinary spice and are now known worldwide. The berries get their pungency from the alkaloid piperine they contain. The variegated variety offered here is particularly beautiful and generally develops increasingly attractive leaves as the vines grow longer.

Pepper plants don't need to be very large to begin flowering. In growing regions, they are trained on trellises about 2 meters high to give the plants plenty of space while still allowing for easy hand-picking. At home, the plants can be pruned to suit a windowsill, hanging pot, or similar location.

White, green and black pepper all come from this one plant species, while pink peppercorns are the fruits of the pepper tree ( Schinus molle ).



Strong young plant in a 9 cm square pot. Approx. 20-30 cm long.



Please note: Piper species are very sensitive to temperature. The plants will only be shipped again in styrofoam boxes with heat packs once nighttime temperatures are consistently between 12 and 15 °C. This may not be until the end of February or even March. Until then, paid plants will remain in our greenhouse and are reserved for you. Orders containing Piper species will NOT be split into partial shipments.
