Description
This piper probably originates from the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo, from the province of Central Kalimantan. Unfortunately, we have no further information about its origin and distribution.
Several different varieties of Piper are sold under the name 'Watermelon'. This is quite confusing. The variety offered here remains significantly smaller and grows more slowly than the more commonly offered variety called 'Watermelon'. The leaf markings are also different. In this form, the leaves are matte (instead of glossy) and usually only have a white marking in the center, which becomes wider in mature plants and sometimes extends into the veins. In younger plants, usually only the area around the midrib is white.
Unlike other Piper species, this marking remains even in large plants and is not only present in the creeping juvenile stage. It grows rather slowly, and like most Piper species, this one prefers to climb, developing differently shaped leaves when climbing. The leaves on climbing stems become more elongated and pointed. The leaves on creeping stems are broader and more rounded.
With proper care, this species also forms numerous so-called "protein bodies" on the undersides of its leaves. It should only be kept in a terrarium, as it requires high humidity.
You will receive a young plant in a 7 cm square pot.
