Description
Sometimes offered as Piper sp. 'Mini Japan', this tiny ornamental pepper plant likely originates from Papua rather than Japan. Nothing further is known about its origin, and it remains very rare in cultivation and is not often available.
This species is by far the smallest Piper we offer. The leaves of juvenile plants are approximately 3.5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Once it is able to climb, the leaf shape changes slightly, and it develops elongated, pointed leaves that are still very small. These are then about 6 cm long and even narrower, at only about 2 cm wide. In both stages, the leaves are very finely speckled with white and have sunken veins, which gives them a three-dimensional structure.
The species grows quite slowly, but is easy to care for in a terrarium and, given enough time, will cover the entire tank with a dense carpet of small, patterned leaves.
You will receive a young plant in a 5 cm square pot, approximately 5 to 7 cm tall. These are very small plants.
Please note: Piper species are very sensitive to temperature. The plants will only be shipped again in styrofoam boxes with heat packs once nighttime temperatures are consistently between 12 and 15 °C. This may not be until the end of February or even March. Until then, paid plants will remain in our greenhouse and are reserved for you. Orders containing Piper species will NOT be split into partial shipments. If you have any questions, please contact us by email at webshop@jungle-leaves.de.
