Description
This fern is usually referred to simply as Platycerium 'Bacteria' or (incorrectly) as Platycerium willinckii 'Bacteria' (P. willinckii has not been a separate species since 1982 but is considered a subspecies of P. bifurcatum ). However, all these names refer to the same plant.
'Bacteria' is a truly tiny cultivar. Similar to ' Jade Girl ', but even smaller. The fronds only reach about 10 cm in length, or 15 cm in very old plants, with multiple branched tips. They are densely covered with white, branched hairs, giving them a powdery appearance. These hairs serve as protection against dehydration. The bracts are simply shaped and form an open "basket" which, in nature, collects leaves and rainwater.
'Bacteria' grows slowly but is not difficult to care for. Due to its slow growth and the long lifespan of its leaves, it forms a dense clump after a few years.
It grows best when mounted or attached sideways to a substrate such as cork. There, it can develop its characteristic antler shape. This species should not be kept too moist and requires plenty of light to thrive. Water carefully in a terrarium. Excessive moisture and overwatering can quickly cause this plant to rot!
You will receive a strong, young orchid plant in a 6 cm pot. Some plants already have their first outer leaves. Well-hardened and robust, no spore-forming plants!
