Description
Plectranthus ernstii is a woody, caudex-forming plant from South Africa. To encourage caudex development, the plant should be pruned regularly. This species is very vigorous, so even radical pruning is quickly forgotten. The plant can also be easily cultivated as a bonsai, as its vigorous growth offers many styling possibilities and is therefore very forgiving of pruning mistakes. Essentially, it's a bonsai for beginners.
Its succulent nature makes it ideal for plant lovers who are reluctant to water their plants, as it indicates its water content through its leaves (see Care). When rubbed, the leaves also release a pleasant aroma, typical of many members of the mint family (Lamiaceae). It begins to flower in April, and its flowering period extends continuously into October. The small, violet flowers are produced on increasingly long flower stalks.
