Pouteria lucuma is a sapote from the Sapotaceae family. It grows in Chile, Ecuador, and Peru at higher elevations of 1000 to 3000 meters above sea level on loose, sandy, and well-drained soils. It is a tree that can reach up to 20 meters in height, but in cultivation, like any tree, it can be kept small through pruning. The fruits grow to about 10 cm in diameter and fall from the tree unripe. In nature, they only ripen fully on the ground. The flesh is soft when ripe, very sweet, but rather dry and mealy. It is therefore usually dried and ground into powder, but can also be eaten raw. The taste is difficult to describe. It is reminiscent of sweet potato, caramel, or maple syrup.
The fruit is very nutrient-rich, primarily due to its low water content. With approximately 100 kcal per 100 g, it is among the most energy-dense fruits.
