Description
The largest of all Salvinia species, rare, but not demanding in cultivation. The fern grows as a floating rhizome with three leaves per node. Two of the leaves are developed as floating leaves heavily hairy on the upper side, the third leaf is split into fine threads and hangs downwards. It is called a "water leaf" and thus takes on the role of roots, which the fern lacks.
The floating leaves grow up to 8 cm long and 3 cm wide, the water leaf grows about 15 cm long.
Salvinia oblongifolia originates from eastern Brazil and grows there in still or slow-flowing, nutrient-rich, warm, and sun-drenched waters. The lotus effect of the floating leaves is particularly impressive in this large species.
In the aquarium, it grows very quickly under good conditions and provides an ideal habitat for young fish with its water leaves.
You will receive a portion approximately 10 cm long.
