Description
Schismatoglottis motleyana is a Schismatoglottis species quite widespread in northern Borneo. We are not entirely certain about the species name. Only herbarium specimens exist for S. motleyana , which do not allow for a precise identification. The only color photograph from a reliable source (International Aroid Society Newsletter, Vol. 28 No. 2, May 2006) that is supposed to show the species looks significantly different from our plants. However, this is not necessarily conclusive, as Schismatoglottis are highly variable in their leaf coloration.
Based on the morphology of the inflorescence of our plants (see image in the gallery), it could also be the even more common and highly variable Schismatoglottis calyptrata . This species is widespread throughout Malesia and exhibits considerable variation in its markings.
As its name suggests, this beautiful plant is distinguished by its attractive light/dark patterned leaves. The majority of the leaf is silvery, with two dark green stripes running lengthwise from the base to the tip. The leaves grow to about 30 cm long and 12 to 14 cm wide. Like other closely related Schismatoglottis species, S. motleyana and S. calayptrata rarely produce seeds, instead spreading via numerous runners and thus forming vast, clonal populations over time.
It thrives best in a humid, warm terrarium and prefers a humidity level of 60% or higher. Those who can provide these conditions indoors can also care for it as a relatively easy-to-grow houseplant.
You will receive a large, strong plant in a 15cm pot, approximately 40 to 50cm tall.
