In a revision by Zhou and Zang (2023), the large and highly diverse genus Selaginella was split into several genera. According to this revision, the new name for this plant is now Chuselaginella intermedia . We will continue to use the old name for the time being, until the new names are confirmed by other authors.
Selaginella intermedia originates from the southern part of the Malay Peninsula (Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand). It has an upright growth habit, similar to Selaginella grandis . The individual stems can reach a height of about 10 to 15 cm and branch out at the top into a small, symmetrical "crown," resembling a tiny tree. The rhizome grows along the ground, producing new stems at short intervals. The leaves of this form are dark brown to black, with cream-colored growth tips. However, S. intermedia only develops this coloration under specific conditions! It only occurs with low light and good nutrient supply. In bright light or nutrient deficiency, S. intermedia is simply green.
Because of its unusual shape and color, this species stands out particularly strongly from other Selaginella and is a real highlight, especially in small terrariums!
In the past, we sold a different Selaginella under the name S. intermedia 'Black Form'. However, it has turned out that this was likely a different, closely related, but more creeping species and not the upright-growing S. intermedia . The plants offered here are likely the true S. intermedia .

You will receive a well-rooted cutting in a 7cm pot.
Please note: The small twigs of this species break very easily. Even with very good packaging, some pieces will likely break off after shipping. Unfortunately, this cannot be prevented, but it doesn't significantly harm the plant. After an acclimatization period, this species continues to grow quite quickly. Such damage is not grounds for a complaint.
