Description
A compact-growing Sphagnum species, developing an intense red coloration in bright light and cool temperatures. Sphagnum rubellum has a circumpolar distribution. It also occurs in Germany, but is becoming increasingly rare there, as it prefers very nutrient-poor raised bogs, which are a rapidly declining habitat in Germany. In suitable locations, it can form extensive mats. The material for our S. rubellum originally came from Sweden, where extensive raised bog areas still exist. However, we cultivate and propagate it locally. The moss sold here is not taken from the wild.
It grows significantly slower than the more commonly offered green sphagnum moss. Therefore, much smaller portions are available for sale here.
You will receive a portion of approximately 10 heads. Please note: Not all heads will be red. This depends on the time of year. They develop the best (deep red) color when they receive cool nights and plenty of light. In summer, the heads tend to be green or only pale red. During our dark winters, the plants are usually green.
