This striking little plant originates from western Borneo and belongs to the Rubiaceae family. For some time, it was sold under the name Argostemma sp . 'Kayu Lapis'. However, this name is incorrect.
In nature, it appears to be extremely rare. It grows in lowland rainforests, mostly near streams and rivers. It grows quite slowly and has remarkably robust leaves and stems. It reaches a height of about 15 to 20 cm. The leaves are spatulate to obovate, 8 to 10 cm long and 4 to 6 cm wide. Their three-dimensional structure is particularly striking. They possess numerous bullae ("bumps") on their upper surface, running between the veins. Upon closer inspection, one can also see numerous metallic silver spots on the leaves, giving them a unique, shimmering appearance.
In the terrarium, its structure and glitter effect immediately catch the eye, especially if it is placed in a slightly darker corner (which it also prefers).
Their flowers are small and white, and rather unspectacular.
