Description
Tannia (Xanthosoma violaceum) originates from South America and is very widespread there. Its growth habit is very reminiscent of the elephant ear (Colocasia) from Asia. It grows to about 2 meters tall, and individual leaves reach about 80 cm long and 50 cm wide. The leaves are dark green and lightly dusted with white. They sit on purple to black leaf stalks, about 1 meter long, which are also covered with a white waxy layer. This layer, by the way, rubs off easily and does not regenerate! So don't rub it too much ;-)
Just like taro (Colocasia esculenta), the starchy stem of Xanthosoma violaceum is cooked and processed into flour, from which a variety of dishes can be prepared.
A small note on the name: Some time ago, the name Xanthosoma violaceum was synonymized with Xanthosoma sagittifolium, so it technically no longer exists. However, we continue to use it here for this form because it clearly differs from the uniformly green "normal" X. sagittifolium.
X. violaceum remains somewhat smaller (2 meters instead of 2.50 meters), has dark green (instead of light green) leaves, and white-dusted, purple to black leaf stalks (instead of glossy green).
You will receive a vigorous young plant, approx. 50 to 60 cm tall.
