Zingiber malaysianum 'Midnight'

This ginger plant (Zingiberaceae) grows only in a small area in the Labis Forest Reserve in Johor, Malaysia and was described in 2002.

This ginger grows with an underground rhizome from which stems emerge at short intervals. The stems of Z. malaysianum reach a height of about 60 cm. The leaves are 10 to 15 cm long and 5 to 1 cm wide, highly glossy on the upper surface, and very dark brown to black. The young leaves are initially chocolate brown, which is why it is also sold under the name "Chocolate".

The inflorescence develops on much shorter stems directly above the ground. The basal umbel bracts are sulfur-yellow and turn pink with age. The cream-colored true flowers then appear between the bracts.

This compact and attractive plant hasn't been cultivated as a houseplant for very long, and our experience with it is still limited. However, we can already say that with a little attention, it grows very well and can be kept in many locations.
