Anthurium wendlingeri

Anthurium wendlingeri is native to Central America and is found from Nicaragua to northern Colombia. It is a member of the section Porphyrochitonium, which is characterized by its epiphytic, trailing growth habit. This species is named after Karl Wendlinger, former head gardener of the botanical gardens in Munich and Caracas.

Anthurium wendlingeri is probably the most striking representative of the section Porphyrochitonium. The leaves, which can grow up to 1.50 meters long, are very dark in color on the upper surface of adult plants and bullate, with numerous tiny, dot-shaped glands. Its growth habit (in its natural state) is strictly pendulous. The stem grows straight downward, and the leaves of adult plants also hang straight downward. The petiole is not strong enough to support the weight of the rather thick leaf in an upright position.

The inflorescence of A. wendlingeri is also very striking. It starts out straight but soon twists into a tight spiral. At the time of flowering, the inflorescence is greenish, gray, or yellow. The ripe berries are red.

This species is surprisingly hardy and easy to care for. Its tough leaves are particularly striking. It grows quite quickly in sufficiently warm temperatures and is hardy, making it very well-suited for beginners!
