Description
This begonia is native to the area near Salvador, in Bahia, Brazil. There, it grows in the hills at elevations of approximately 300 to 800 meters above sea level in forests with favorable climatic conditions. In this case, that means slightly cooler temperatures than in the hot lowlands and a dry season that is not quite as severe as usual. It has kidney-shaped, fizzy leaves with a striking bluish-greenish color, which can even take on a violet hue in older plants and light yellow-green veins. The hairs on the leaves (and all other parts of the plant) are red. The leaves are slightly thickened and feel velvety to the touch.
It grows as a creeping, flat rhizome. The leaves also lie flat against the ground (an adaptation to minimize evaporation during the dry season), and the entire plant, without its inflorescence, grows to only about 5 cm tall, with a width of approximately 30 cm. Its inflorescence grows to about 10 to 20 cm tall and bears white flowers with a slight pinkish tint.
Once acclimated, it is also suitable as a houseplant, as it does not necessarily require high humidity. Anything above about 50% is sufficient.
You will receive a young plant in a 6-cm pot. Please care for it initially in a plant cabinet, box, or similar container!
