Description
This tiny plant is found almost worldwide in tropical and subtropical regions and is highly adaptable to many different habitats. It is very often found on or near stones, rocks, and walls. As long as the ground is slightly moist, it can grow on virtually any substrate. The name “microphylla” is very aptly chosen, as the leaves of this plant are indeed tiny. They usually grow to only about 1–3 mm long and 1–2 mm wide. Pilea microphylla branches profusely and has a creeping to bushy growth habit, depending on environmental conditions. When grown in dry conditions, it forms a dense, green, and very flat mat. In moist conditions, it tends to be bushier and more upright. Because of its fern-like appearance, it is also known as the “Artillery Fern.” The “Artillery” in the name refers to the exploding seed capsules, which can hurl seeds over 30 cm. Of course, it is not actually a fern.
The flowers, just like the leaves, are tiny and a subtle shade of pink.
You’ll receive a sturdy plant, approximately 10 to 20 cm tall, in a 10 cm pot.
