Hoya crassipetiolata 'Splash'

Hoya crassipetiolata is native to Vietnam, specifically the provinces of Bac Kan, Dien Bien, Khanh Hoa, Quang Binh, and Quang Tri. There, it grows epiphytically or lithophytically in evergreen secondary forests on sandy soils along the coast or on rocky karst limestone, often on steep slopes and cliffs at elevations ranging from 10 to 1,400 meters above sea level.

It was not described as a new species until 2017, although it is apparently quite common in Vietnam. Its name means “thick leaf stalk,” and that certainly holds true. The leaves themselves are also slightly thickened, but not hard, rather, they are rubbery. The leaf veins are slightly darker than the rest of the leaf, making them somewhat reminiscent of the net-veined leaves of, for example, Hoya callistophylla, to which it is not closely related.

More striking are the light speckles on the leaves. This natural variegation camouflages the plant in the forest, making its contours appear blurred or giving the leaves the appearance of being infested with lichens and algae, which makes them less attractive to herbivores.

The flowers are typical of Hoya and appear in clusters of 12 to over 30 individual blooms.

In our experience, H. crassipetiolata is a very fast-growing and vigorous plant, making it a great choice for beginners. It grows very vigorously.
