Description

Adiantum caudatum belongs to the maidenhair ferns (Adiantum) and is native to the Asian tropics, where it is very widespread.

It is characterized by its trailing growth habit with long, narrow fronds, which distinguishes it from all other commonly cultivated Adiantum species, which tend to grow upright.

It grows in moist, shady habitats on damp rocks or even epiphytically on mossy tree trunks. It reaches a length of about 30 to 60 cm and a width of 15 to 20 cm. The individual fronds are light green, triangular, and have lobed margins. Particularly striking are the orange to reddish tips of fresh fronds. They give it a very delicate, lacy appearance.

Although A. caudatum resembles the native maidenhair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris), it is not hardy. It should therefore only be grown as a houseplant or terrarium plant!
