Alpinia rugosa (Gerunzelte Alpinie)

Alpinia and similar members of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) are generally easy-to-care-for and hardy plants, which makes it all the more surprising that they aren’t more widely available and remain relatively unknown.

Alpinia typically grow in the shady understory of rainforests; accordingly, they prefer partial shade and warm but not too hot temperatures. Some species are subtropical and go dormant in winter.

They are robust, pest-resistant, and adaptable plants that are also well-suited for beginners.

When grown as houseplants, especially in winter, you should expect some of the old pseudostems to die back and for the plant to partially retreat into its rhizome.

Alpinia are native to the understory of rainforests and are therefore adapted to partially shaded to shaded conditions.

As houseplants, they should be placed where they receive bright but indirect light, such as next to a south-facing window or directly by an east-facing window. They also tolerate a few hours of morning sun well, but must be protected from the harsh midday sun, especially in the summer.

When grown under plant lights in a plant cabinet , terrarium, or grow tent, low to moderate light levels are also sufficient. At 2,000 to 5,000 lux or 40 to 120 PPFD (µmol/m²/s), they grow well and their leaves develop ideal coloration.

Alpinia prefer loose, well-aerated potting mix. They grow perfectly in our Aroid Mix or, depending on whether you want to water them a little more, even better in the finer Houseplant Mix.

Since they grow from an underground, creeping stem (rhizome), they need to be repotted when this stem reaches the rim of the pot. You can also divide the plants at this time, if desired.

Tropical Alpinia should always be kept moderately moist and never allowed to dry out completely.

They can be watered with moderately hard tap water. Regular rinsing with soft water such as rainwater, distilled water, or RO water about every 3 months is beneficial and prevents lime buildup in the potting mix.

Alpinia grow at a moderate rate, which is why they require regular fertilization. As houseplants, they can be fertilized weekly during the growing season from approximately April through October with a good all-purpose fertilizer (N-P-K + trace elements) for houseplants, such as Wuxal Universal Fertilizer. We recommend reducing the dosage specified by the manufacturer by about half. This corresponds to a fertilizer conductivity of approximately 500 µS/cm. The conductivity can be measured with a TDS meter.

During the fall and winter months, fertilization should be reduced, as the plants no longer receive enough light to utilize the nutrients. A very low fertilization rate of approximately 100–200 µS/cm once a month is sufficient.

When grown under plant lamps, they can be fertilized weekly year-round at approximately 500 µS/cm.

If they are watered only with soft water (e.g., when kept in a terrarium), a calcium and magnesium fertilizer (so-called CalMag fertilizer) should also be used.

Regular foliar feeding with an iron fertilizer ensures even more vibrant leaf coloration, especially when the plants receive plenty of light.

For subtropical species that enter dormancy in winter, reduce fertilization and watering starting in October until they are almost completely dried out, and overwinter the rhizomes in the pot in only very slightly moist soil until around the end of March.
