Description
Amydrium medium is a vine from Southeast Asia, primarily Borneo (Malaysia), Indonesia, and the Philippines. It grows as a hemiepiphytic climber in the rainforests there.
In nature, it can grow over 10 meters tall. Its simple pinnate leaves can reach up to 40 cm in length! Large leaves of this species also have a series of fenestrations (holes) along the midrib, similar to Monstera.
Most specimens of A. medium in nature have green leaves. Specimens with silvery leaves are quite rare. The cultivated form 'Silver' is a selection with particularly strong, very striking silvery coloration on the leaves. Unfortunately, it's hard to convey in pictures, but the surface shimmers like mother-of-pearl!
The internode spacing on this species is quite short, especially when it can climb. However, if it has no surface to climb, it often produces no leaves at all, or only at very long intervals. They also don't grow particularly large this way.
With good care, A. medium grows quite quickly and produces large leaves in a short time.
