Description
This begonia is native to southwestern China (parts of Yunnan and Guangxi provinces) and northern Vietnam. It grows in a somewhat subtropical climate at elevations ranging from 900 to 1,500 meters. It therefore tolerates slightly cooler conditions better than many other spectacularly patterned begonias from Southeast Asia. Larger specimens may therefore also be suitable as houseplants if you can provide them with higher humidity.
Begonia cathayana is a cane begonia and grows to about 60 cm tall. It branches profusely and, over time, forms a very pretty, compact bush. All parts of the plant are covered with dense, velvety pink hairs. Its leaves have a dark green base color with a striking, surrounding light green ring and red veins. When grown in low light, the contrast becomes even more pronounced, and the base color of the leaf can turn almost black, further intensifying the contrast. It exhibits a slight blue iridescence.
The pattern on the upper surface continues on the underside as well, though in slightly different colors. The base color is red, with a light green ring around the edge.
It blooms profusely, producing white to slightly pinkish flowers. The flower buds are also heavily hairy.
It belongs to the Platycentrum section.
You will receive a vigorous young plant in a 6 cm pot. These young plants still require high humidity. Therefore, please care for them initially in a terrarium or plant cabinet rather than as a houseplant!
