This begonia was discovered and cultivated by Henri Laporte during a botanical collecting expedition to Madagascar in 1998. However, it was not described as a new species (and named after him) until 2016. In the wild, it is known only from a single location on the edge of Masoala National Park in northern Madagascar. The known population consists of only 10 to 20 individuals on a single rock , and despite thorough exploration of the area during several expeditions, no further populations have yet been found. It was therefore classified as "critically endangered" by its describers according to the criteria of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is also due, in part, to the fact that the location is near a path frequently used by local farmers and villagers.
This makes B. henrilaportei certainly the rarest begonia in our collection. We actually have more individual plants of this species in our greenhouses than are known to exist in nature (however, all our plants originate from vegetative propagation of a single mother plant and are therefore genetically identical; the natural population is probably not).
Begonia henrilaportei is a miniature species with leaves approximately 5 to 10 cm long and only 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide, featuring strongly curved, lobed margins. The veins are slightly prominent. It grows via a creeping/climbing rhizome that can reach up to 30 cm in length, though it usually remains shorter. It branches profusely. The leaves have a metallic green sheen that is very difficult to photograph. I have attempted to capture this in a video .
The flowers are pink . It (probably) belongs to the section Nerviplacentaria .

You will receive a strong young plant in a 5cm pot. Like all African begonias, these plants are sensitive to changes in conditions and usually shed their leaves after shipping, only to grow new ones later. This is unavoidable and no reason to complain.
