This small begonia originates from southwestern China, Gunagxi Province, near the city of Ningming, close to the border with Vietnam. The climate there is subtropical, with warm, humid summers and cooler, dry winters. There are two known varieties of Begonina ningmingensis : Begonia ningmingensis var. ningminensis and the Begonia ningmingensis var. bella offered here. They differ mainly in the size, shape, and pattern of their leaves. The ningmingensis variety is more widespread and has larger, pointed leaves with less pronounced markings. The bella variety remains smaller, has completely round leaves, and a very contrasting white pattern along the main veins. It is known from only one location in the wild and appears to be considerably rarer.
It grows with a creeping rhizome on limestone hillocks in deciduous forests, often directly on stony slopes or rocks. The leaves are about 6 to 8 cm long and 5 to 7 cm wide and (almost) circular, with dense hairs. The leaf surface is covered with many small bullae ("bumps"), each topped with a short, stiff hair. The leaves are most vibrant in low light. They have a dark green base color with a very striking white pattern along the main veins. The leaves are held flat against the ground, and the entire plant (excluding the inflorescence) only reaches a height of about 5 to 10 cm, with a diameter of 20 to 30 cm.
Its inflorescence grows to about 5 to 15 cm high and bears white flowers that tend slightly towards pink.
It belongs to the Coelocentrum section.
