Begonia rajah originates from the southern Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. It grows on rocky slopes or directly on rocks and has an unusual growth habit. It presses its leaves flat against the rocky surface, allowing condensation to collect beneath them, thus reducing water loss through evaporation. The leaves are hard and waxy on the upper surface, another adaptation to prevent desiccation. These characteristics indicate that it comes from a seasonally dry climate.
It grows rather slowly, but is truly robust and, as a larger plant, is also very well suited as a houseplant. It will take several years, but Begonia rajah reaches an impressive size. The leaves reach about 20 cm in diameter, and the entire plant can grow to be 60 to 80 cm wide and 30 cm high. The base color of the leaves is a dark reddish-brown with light green veins. Fresh leaves are initially bright red. The veins are sunken, and the leaf surface between the veins is raised (bullate).
It blooms with pink flowers.
She belongs to the Jackia section.
