Description
Begonia tenuissima is known only from a very small population in the Belaga District, Sarawak, Borneo. It grows on deeply shaded, moss-covered rocks or on moss-covered slopes at an elevation of 541–589 m above sea level.
It was described as a new species in 2015, and the specific epithet “tenuissima” (literally “the narrowest”) refers to its narrow, almost needle-like leaves. It grows to about 30 to 40 cm in height and width and branches profusely. As it matures, the very thin stems become woody, and the plant is surprisingly sturdy and robust. The leaves grow to about 8 cm long and are only 8 to 12 mm wide, with serrated edges. The leaves are dark green and slightly thickened. In bright light, the newly emerging leaves are red to orange.
It blooms profusely with pale pink to pink flowers. It belongs to the section Petermannia.
