Description
Begonia U508 is a species not yet scientifically described, which first arrived in Europe in 1995. Henri Laporte of AFABEGO (Association Francoise de Amateur de Begonias) brought this species from Malaysia, where it was already being cultivated in the Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden. Its true origin is therefore unknown, but is very likely also in Malaysia. He named this plant 'Cote de Castillon', after a red wine from the region, which the beautiful wine-red undersides of the leaves reminded him of.
The upper surfaces are no less spectacular, possessing a steel-gray, metallic sheen. In sufficient light, a faint pinkish hue also appears. The undersides and leaf stalks are densely covered with white hairs. This fast-growing species also reaches enormous sizes. Individual leaves can grow up to 40 cm in length, and an entire plant can span a width of 1 m.
Despite its (likely) tropical origin, this species tolerates cool temperatures (down to a minimum of about 2°C), and some gardeners in the USA have even planted it outdoors in their gardens. It is also tolerant of low humidity and low light. A perfect indoor begonia.
