Billbergia saundersii Hybrid - gepunktet

This unusual bromeliad belongs to the little-known genus Billbergia, which is characterised by its particularly narrow funnels and often beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, we do not know exactly which species or hybrid our plants are. However, it is certainly a cultivar derived from, or a hybrid with, Billbergia saundersii from eastern Brazil.

It has a very narrow, almost completely vertical funnel (in bright light) measuring approximately 6 to 9 cm in diameter. The leaves are dark green to purple in colour with yellowish spots on the curved tips. Sometimes a pink colour gradient can also be seen here. In lower light, the funnels open wider and the leaves remain green.

Billbergia saundersii is a large species. The funnels can grow to a height of 60 to 80 cm. It produces numerous offshoots and thus, over time, forms a dense clump of closely packed leaf rosettes.

The inflorescences are long and protrude from the top of the funnel. The inflorescence itself is red; the flowers are green with blue-edged petals. Truly beautiful!
