Description

Caladium humboldtii originates from southern Venezuela and northern Brazil. It is one of the smallest Caladium species and is naturally white-patterned. It is therefore not a cultivated variety or hybrid, but actually a natural form. The leaves grow only about 10 cm long and 6 to 8 cm wide and are borne on 20 to 30 cm long petioles. Unlike the more well-known Caladium bicolor and its numerous color forms, Caladium humboldtii does not have a pronounced leafless dormancy period. This makes it very suitable for terrariums, both in terms of size and care! However, it can also be kept well as a houseplant, but must never dry out.

It grows very densely and bears many leaves simultaneously. In the soil, it has a thickened storage rhizome, which branches extensively and forms many offshoots. The individual leaves do not last particularly long, bend downwards with age, and then dry out. This is the normal appearance of the plant and not a defect.

Watering & Fertilizing

This Alocasia prefers soft water and should therefore be watered with distilled water, rainwater, or water from an osmosis system. It should never completely dry out, but how moist it likes to be strongly depends on the (substrate) temperature. In summer and at temperatures above 25°C, it can be kept consistently moist to wet. If it is kept as a houseplant (especially on a windowsill), it should be watered sparingly in winter, as the combination of colder temperatures and moisture weakens it and can lead to rot. We recommend placing it on a heating mat in winter, in which case it can continue to be watered normally.

This is a rather slow-growing species that doesn't need too much fertilizer. Fertilization should occur during the main growing season, from about May to September. If additional lighting is not provided, this plant will grow little to not at all from October to April, and does not need to be fertilized. No special fertilizer needs to be used. A normal complete fertilizer (N-P-K + trace elements) for houseplants is sufficient. We recommend halving the dosage indicated by the manufacturer (this corresponds to about 500 µS/cm conductivity of fertilizer).

When cared for under grow lights, it can be fertilized year-round.
