Description
This robust plant, which strongly resembles a palm, actually belongs to a completely different family of plants, known as the Cyclanthaceae. With their large, often lobed leaves, they resemble palms (Arecaceae) but are not closely related to them.
Cyclanths are slow-growing plants found in the undergrowth of tropical rainforests in South America, rather than large, tree-like plants such as palms. Some of them are therefore much better suited as houseplants than many palms, which simply become too large for the home. Carludovica palmata is one of them. As it is an understorey plant, it does not need much light, but should always be kept moist to wet.
In the wild, it grows to ‘only’ about 3 metres in height, but remains considerably smaller when grown in a pot. It does not develop a trunk but instead produces increasingly long petioles. In larger plants, the leaves split into several segments. This gives it the perfect ‘palm-like’ appearance. It grows slowly. However, the very robust and sturdy leaves are long-lasting.
It also flowers, producing an inflorescence reminiscent of a young sweetcorn cob. The flowers have a pleasant, perfumed scent.
It is known as the ‘Panama hat palm’ because the fibres of this plant are traditionally used to make the aforementioned hats.
You will receive a vigorous young plant in a 14 cm pot.
