Description
The Kaempferia genus, which is still relatively unknown as a houseplant, originates from subtropical to tropical regions of Asia and belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Some Kaempferia species, most notably the galangal (Kaempferia galanga), are used in Asian cuisine, whilst others are popular there as ornamental plants. They are also becoming increasingly popular here.
Cornukaempferia aurantiiflora (spelt correctly with ‘ii’!) is a medium-sized species from northern Thailand.
The leaves of Cornukaempferia aurantiiflora are reminiscent of those of some Calathea species. The leaf margin has a silvery sheen, whilst a velvety green stripe remains visible in the centre of the leaf. In mature plants, this strip turns dark, almost black.
The leaves are simple, oval and up to 20 cm long and 12 cm wide. Several bands with silvery markings spread across them in concentric rings. Cornukaempferia aurantiiflora has an underground rhizome from which new shoots grow at short intervals, each bearing only a few pairs of leaves. It remains close to the ground and usually does not grow taller than 15 cm. At the tip of each shoot, magnificent orange flowers, approximately 3 to 5 cm in size, appear. These pretty flowers are a lovely bonus to this attractive foliage plant, though they last only a few days.
Kaempferia are less susceptible to pests than the similar-looking Calatheas and have very similar (low) care requirements. In our experience, ginger plants are generally very hardy and easy to care for, and we hope they will become even more popular in the future!
You will receive a vigorous plant in a 9 cm pot. Like most tuberous or rhizomatous plants, it needs a large pot, so please repot it fairly soon after receiving it!
