Description
Corybas are small to tiny, seasonally growing orchids from Asia and Australia with underground tubers.
Corybas geminigibbus is widespread and found in seasonally dry tropical forests from Thailand and Penicillium Malaysia through Borneo to the Philippines. It is one of the smaller members of the genus. The tubers, measuring approximately 5 to 8 mm, are buried up to 5 cm deep and, during the rainy season, produce a single leaf, about 2 to 4 cm in size, with silvery veins.
Once the plant is large enough, a single flower, also about 2 to 4 cm in diameter, will develop. The petals form a hood over the flower parts, resembling a helmet. This is why Corybas are also called "helmet orchids" in English. The lateral petals are elongated into long threads, which can reach up to 5 cm in length! The flower lasts approximately 2 to 3 weeks.
Each individual leaf lasts for about six months, then the dry season begins in nature and the plant retreats into its tuber. Under good conditions, one to three daughter tubers will have already formed by this time. Coryba plants then survive the dry season entirely underground until the growth cycle begins anew at the start of the next rainy season.
Corybas are only available from us once a year and in limited quantities!
You will receive a sprouted plant in a 6 cm orchid pot. The leaf is usually located at the edge of the pot, not in the center. The plants should remain in their pots until the next dormancy period and should not be removed or repotted!
