Description
Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star', 'Rubin Star', 'Pink Starlite', and 'Strawberry Flambee' are relatively small bromeliads (Bromeliaceae), reaching approximately 10 to 15 cm in height, and originate from eastern Brazil. There, they grow terrestrially (in the ground) in relatively dry savanna regions, unlike many other bromeliads which grow as epiphytes in rainforests. For this reason, Cryptanthus are often called "earth stars." Their tough, thick leaves serve as water storage organs.
After an inflorescence has formed, the mother plant slowly dies and produces many small offshoots that emerge on the sides.
