Description
Ficus pumila, the climbing fig, is native to Southeast Asia but has since been introduced to tropical regions worldwide, where it has become an invasive species.
The climbing fig grows very quickly and densely, both as a ground cover and as a climbing plant. It is not picky about the surface to which it attaches itself with its aerial roots. In nature, it naturally climbs mainly trees, but it also grows on rocks, wooden walls, and, in our greenhouse, even on plastic multi-wall panels!
It also branches profusely, forming dense mats. Because of these characteristics, it’s a popular terrarium plant when you want to quickly create a green backdrop or a densely vegetated substrate. In small terrariums, however, it can quickly get out of hand and must be kept under control through regular pruning.
