Description
Leptotes bicolor is native to the subtropical rainforests and coastal mountains stretching from Brazil to Paraguay.
This beautiful, heat-loving orchid has cylindrical, pencil-like pseudobulbs, which are encased at the base by several membranous bracts. At their tip is a single, tapering, thickened, rounded leaf which, in low light, grows elongated and curved, whereas in bright light it grows shorter, thicker and straighter. It is only in bright light that the leaves develop an attractive red speckling.
The leaves grow to a length of about 5 to 12 cm. In bright light, they remain significantly more compact. It grows slightly larger and prefers warmer conditions than its close relative, Leptotes unicolor, which we also offer.
The flowers, which are surprisingly large for such small plants, are bicoloured white with a purple lip and appear one to three after each other. They have a vanilla scent. The flowering period is in late winter or early spring.
It is said that vanilla flavouring can be extracted from the seed pods.
You will receive a mounted, flowering size plant.
