Description
Ludisia discolor is the jewel orchid and is found in a wide distribution area from southern China, through Sumatra, to the Philippines. It grows there in very shady locations, mostly directly on damp stones (lithophytic), over which it creeps with its thickened, fleshy rhizomes. Although it is a terrestrial orchid that grows on the ground, its care is not really comparable to that of a typical terrestrial plant. It grows more on top of , rather than actually in, the soil.
It grows to only about 10 cm tall (excluding the flower stalk), with leaves 5 to 9 cm long. The leaves have a dark green, sometimes almost black, base color and usually exactly three pink to red longitudinal stripes. This coloration is most pronounced in low light and warm temperatures.
The leaves are arranged spirally on each shoot, and when they reach a certain size, an inflorescence emerges from their center, which can reach up to 30 cm in height. The flowers are small, white, and rather inconspicuous. After flowering, the shoot from which the inflorescence grew slowly dies back, but produces numerous runners that in turn grow to flowering size. Through this cycle, a single plant eventually forms dense mats, which looks absolutely stunning in a terrarium.
You will receive a plant with several shoots in a 10-12cm pot.
