Description
Monstera sp. 'Peru', also known as Monstera karstenianum, is a climbing plant from the arum family (Araceae). This unidentified Monstera species from Peru has beautiful, dark green leaves with raised "blisters." This leaf structure is described as bullate or bladder-like.
Monstera are hemiepiphytic vines, meaning they start as seedlings on the forest floor and then climb trees using their rhizomes. During this process, they change their size and leaf shape. In their juvenile stage, the leaves are small and have few or no holes. Shortly after finding a support to climb on (and receiving more light due to the increased height), the leaves quickly grow larger and assume their adult form. However, in this particular Monstera, the leaves remain relatively compact, reaching a maximum length of 30 cm, and do not develop any holes.
