Nautilocalyx pemphidius is a member of the Gesneriaceae family from Venezuela. It grows on the rainforest floor, often on damp, moss-covered stones along streams. The leaves grow to about 10 cm long and only about 1 to 2 cm wide, arranged in rosettes on short stems about 10 cm tall. Over time, it forms dense stands. The leaves vary in color depending on the light. They can be light green with a reddish tinge or dark brown to black. The pronounced texture of the leaves is particularly striking. The entire plant is also slightly whitish-hairy, which is especially noticeable on dark-colored leaves.
It blooms regularly and profusely with white flowers typical of Gesneria, which are about 1 to 1.5 cm long.
