Description
One of the largest carnivorous plants in the world yet perfectly suited for indoor cultivation!
Nepenthes truncata is native to the Philippine island of Mindanao, where it typically grows terrestrially in semi-open habitats at elevations ranging from 230 to 1,500 meters.
Unlike most other pitcher plants, N. truncata is not a true climber. Although the stem grows long with age, it tends to creep along the ground rather than climb trees or shrubs. That would be difficult anyway, given its weight and size. The stem, which can be up to 5 cm thick and becomes woody with age, bears enormous, heart-shaped leaves that are up to 40 cm wide and appear as if they’ve been “truncated.” It owes its name to these truncated leaves.
The pitchers of Nepenthes truncata are among the largest in the genus. They usually grow to 40 cm, and rarely up to 50 cm! They are extremely variable in shape and color. There are red, green, orange, and yellow pitchers with an equally variable peristome that can be striped, solid-colored, red, green, orange, or yellow.
Nepenthes truncata is one of the hardiest species and grows very quickly under good conditions. It is also well-suited as a houseplant if it receives enough light. A grow light is helpful in the winter.
You will receive a well-hardened young plant, approximately 3 to 5 cm in diameter, in a 5 cm pot. These are young plants propagated from seed.
