Description
Philodendron tortum is a Philodendron species from northern Brazil. It grows as a hemiepiphytic vine in the rainforests there at altitudes of approximately 50 to 500 m.
Contrary to what is often claimed, P. tortum is not a cultivated form of P. bipinnatifidum (which has also not been a Philodendron since 2018 but has since been classified in the genus Thaumatophyllum ).
P. tortum is a distinct species ( link to herbarium specimens ) and has been since at least 2001. The confusion with T. bipinnatifidum is somewhat puzzling, considering that the latter is not a tendril but an upright, tree-like bush with a 15cm thick trunk, thus bearing no resemblance whatsoever to the delicate, climbing P. tortum .
The leaves are simply pinnate and very deeply lobed, making it look almost like a fern. Practically a "fernodendron" ;)
The spaces between the leaves are quite short in this species, especially when it is climbing. The leaves can grow up to 60 cm long!
To get such large leaves on your own P. tortum , two things are absolutely necessary:
On the one hand, the plant needs plenty of indirect light, but no direct sunlight.
On the other hand, P. tortum needs a climbing support to which it can cling with its aerial roots. Only then will it develop its enormous and spectacular leaves.
With good care, P. tortum grows quite quickly and forms large leaves in a short time.
You will receive a young plant approximately 20 cm long in a 12 cm pot. The ideal size to provide a trellis or other support so the plant can begin to climb!
