Pilea microphylla

This tiny plant is widespread throughout the tropics and subtropics worldwide and is highly adaptable to many different habitats. It is very often found on or growing on stones, rocks, and walls. As long as it has slightly moist soil, it can grow in practically any substrate. The name " microphylla " is very apt, as the leaves of this plant are indeed minuscule. They are usually only about 1-3 mm long and 1-2 mm wide. Pilea microphylla branches profusely and has a creeping growth habit. Over time, it forms a dense, green mat that is somewhat reminiscent of moss or a fern. Because of its fern-like appearance, it is also known as "Artillery Fern" in English. The "Artillery" in the name refers to the exploding seed capsules, which can catapult seeds over 30 cm away. However, it is not actually a fern.

The flowers, just like the leaves, are tiny and an inconspicuous pink.

Because it dries out quite quickly under typical apartment conditions, we recommend keeping P. microphylla in a terrarium or a plant display case.
