This slow-growing moss fern originates from a large distribution area in Asia. While it has been found in isolated locations in tropical countries such as the Philippines and southern Vietnam, it primarily grows in the temperate climates of Taiwan, southern China, South Korea, North Korea, and Japan, extending as far as Primorsky Krai in Russia, around the city of Vladivostok. It is therefore not a tropical plant! Consequently, a warm, humid, tropical climate is absolutely fatal for this plant in the long term! For details on its care, see the "Care" tab.
Selaginella tamariscina reaches a diameter of approximately 40 cm, but usually remains smaller with a crown diameter of 25 to 30 cm. The leaves (microphylls) lie close to the multiple dichotomously branched limbs, giving it a delicate appearance. They are harder and more pointed than those of tropical Selaginella species and can withstand short periods of drying out without damage. During this time, the limbs curl up and uncurl again once moist. This is reminiscent of the so-called "False Rose of Jericho" ( Selaginella lepidophylla ).
Over time , S. tamariscina develops a so-called pseudostem. This consists of roots that grow downwards from the crown, supplying and supporting the plant, similar to tree ferns. The pseudostem grows only a few centimeters per year and can reach a length of 30 to 40 cm.
Extracts of S. tamariscina have long been used in the traditional medicines of the Asian countries where it grows. It is attributed with various healing properties.

You will receive a strong plant with a 5 to 10 cm pseudostem and a 10 to 15 cm crown diameter in a 7 cm pot.
Please note: The small branches of this species break very easily. Even with very good packaging, some pieces will likely break off after shipping. Unfortunately, this cannot be prevented, but it doesn't significantly harm the plant. After an acclimatization period, this species continues to grow quite quickly. Such damage is not grounds for a complaint.
