Description
Tectaria hilocarpa is a small, terrestrial fern with patterned leaves that grows in northern Borneo, Sulawesi, and some other Philippine islands. It is widespread in its habitat and thrives in both dry and humid environments. It reaches a diameter of about 30 cm while remaining very flat (usually only about 10 cm tall). The leaves of mature plants display a striking light/dark green pattern and are sometimes divided into three sections. Young plants do not yet exhibit this pronounced spotted pattern and always have simple, elongated leaves. Even quite small plants produce sporophylls. These are smaller, upright leaves on which the spores are formed. They grow to about 30 cm tall and can be safely cut off.
In our experience, T. hilocarpa is very easy to care for in a terrarium, but requires consistently high humidity, which is why we do not recommend it as a houseplant.
You will receive a strong young plant in a 6 cm pot.
