Orchid Surprise Package (House & Terrarium Orchids)

Tolumnia are mostly small orchids that grow in intermediate to cool conditions and are related to Oncidium. Most species are native to the Greater Antilles, though some extend as far as the Central American mainland and northern South America.

The very striking flowers, which are relatively large for such a small plant, mimic those of the Malpighia family (Malphigiaceae). These plants produce oils that are collected by bees of the genus Centris. The Tolumnia mimic these flowers to attract the bees, but do not produce any oils themselves.

The complex hybrid ‘Jairak Rainbow’ offered here grows to about 10 to 12 cm and begins to bloom when the leaf span reaches approximately 6 cm. In bright light, the leaves turn red and the plant remains significantly more compact.

The flowers are extremely variable; each offspring of the parents looks different. Some have been given their own names and are known by them, but most remain unnamed.

You will receive a flowering size plant in a 4-cm mesh pot (without substrate).
