Description
Vriesea splendens originates from northeastern South America (Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela). It grows to about 30 cm tall and reaches a diameter of 40 cm. It grows epiphytically, mostly on the branches of large rainforest trees. Its roots cling firmly to the bark. However, it is not parasitic and does not draw nutrients from its host tree. The contrasting striped leaves form a tight, upright rosette and create a watertight funnel in the center; it is a so-called "tank bromeliad." In nature, rainwater and leaves collect in this funnel, and numerous animals and microorganisms use this water reservoir, for example, frogs for their tadpoles, mosquitoes for their larvae, and many more. Through the activity of these animals and microorganisms, the leaves that have fallen into the funnel decompose, and the Vriesea absorbs the waste products as nutrients. This ensures it is always well supplied with water and nutrients.
When the main flower spike is large enough (from about 20 cm in diameter), a spectacular red flower stalk grows from its center, reaching up to 50 cm in height. The individual yellow flowers then emerge one after another from the sides of the flower spike over several days. After flowering (or shortly before), offsets, or pups, develop from the base of the plant. These new spikes will become separate plants. Once the main spike has finished flowering, it slowly dies back and is replaced by the offsets. The offsets grow into new, separate spikes until they flower again, and the process repeats itself.
