Description
Special substrate for limestone-associated begonias from Southeast Asia, e.g., Begonia pavonina, amphioxus, bipinnatifida, darthvaderiana, chlorosticta, chloroneura, sp. 'Temuyuk', sp. 'Sulawesi Black' and similar.
Most of the best-known and most spectacular foliage begonias come from Southeast Asia, where they usually grow in so-called "leaf litter traps" on limestone soils. These are depressions and hollows in the forest floor or recesses in slopes, where organic components such as leaves, branches and moss collect, as well as clay and fine stones. Our Begonia Mix aims to imitate these conditions. It is finely structured, uniform and very dimensionally stable, making it ideal for the fine roots of these begonias. It also does not compact, giving it a long lifespan.
We have tested this new mix with our large and valuable mother plants for several months, and we are so convinced by the results that we are now adapting the recipe of the Begonia Mix in the shop.
This substrate consists of:
- Coconut fiber
- Coconut chips
- Perlite
- Sphagnum moss
- Clay powder
- Volcanic rock dust
- Limestone grit
The mix is lightly fertilized with an organic fertilizer. The pH value is buffered against overly acidic soil conditions by the addition of limestone grit, which imitates the limestone substrate in its natural habitat. The clay powder and volcanic rock dust increase the exchange capacity for vital micronutrients. The structure is loose and airy, but still retains a lot of water due to the addition of coconut chips.
Please note: Our substrates are not machine-mixed and filled, and therefore may sometimes vary slightly in composition. In addition, approximately 10% more substrate should be planned for due to compaction during potting!
