Description
Medium-sized coconut chips (or coconut husks, 8 to 16 mm), pre-washed, and low in germs. A substitute for pine bark as a substrate for epiphytes. Coconut chips retain significantly more water than bark pieces, remain stable and airy for years without decomposing, and are and remain chemically neutral. In our experience, they are not only an equivalent substitute for pine bark, but clearly superior!
Unlike the commonly offered pressed blocks, which need to be soaked in water and contain a lot of salt (conductivity > 4000 µS/cm!!), these coconut chips are unpressed and already washed, and therefore salt-free. They can be used directly without any further washing. According to our tests, they have a conductivity of less than 250 µS/cm after the first watering. After two to three waterings, the conductivity is < 100 µS/cm. They can therefore be used without hesitation even for very sensitive plants (e.g., carnivorous plants, highland orchids, etc.).
We use these coconut chips as a substitute for bark, sphagnum moss, and peat, especially for epiphytes. We are absolutely convinced by the results so far. We have tested pure or nearly pure coconut chips as a substrate for the following genera and observed very good root development:
We've also replaced the bark in our Aroid Mix with coconut chips. This makes it even better and more stable for terrestrial plants.
Please note: Our substrates are not mixed and packaged by machine and may therefore sometimes have slightly different compositions. Also, please allow for approximately 10% more substrate when potting due to the need for firming.
