Description
Special substrate for hemi-epiphytic aroids (Araceae), especially Anthurium, Philodendron, Monstera, Rhaphidophora, Amydrium, Epipremnum, Scindapsus, Cercestis and other genera.
Many aroids, especially from the genera mentioned above, grow as climbing plants that begin their lives at the base of large rainforest trees. Between the buttress roots of these trees, leaves and broken branches from the tree crowns accumulate, moss grows, and many soil organisms decompose this mass. Our Aroid Mix is designed to imitate these conditions. It is very airy yet retains a lot of moisture. It consists of partially decomposed organic matter and is slightly acidic, unfertilized, and low in nutrients.
The uniform, medium-fine structure is suitable for small to medium-sized plants. Truly large specimens, especially large Anthurium, should preferably be potted in an even coarser mix with more bark or coconut chips!
This substrate can also be made yourself. It consists of:
- 40% coconut chips
- 20% coir substrate
- 20% perlite
- 20% Chilean Sphagnum moss
- Clay powder and rock dust for optimal nutrient absorption
The recipe is no secret, but here you get a perfectly blended mix, ready to use, in a practical 7.5L bag ;)
This substrate is unfertilized and should be mixed with a slow-release fertilizer like our Osmocote. Alternatively, it can be fertilized regularly with a liquid fertilizer.
Please note: Our substrates are not machine-mixed and filled, and therefore may sometimes have slightly varying compositions. Additionally, due to compaction during potting, approximately 10% more substrate should be planned for!
